Our Origins
Founded in 1973 in the Bay Area, EAR Magazine began as a volunteer-based effort to balance traditional classical music with contemporary compositions. Led by editors Charles Shere, Ann Kish, and later Beth Anderson, the publication quickly gained recognition for its extensive concert listings and for publishing new musical scores by acclaimed composers like Lou Harrison, Beth Anderson, and Gene Tyranny.
In 1975, Beth Anderson expanded EAR’s reach to New York, turning it into a notable voice in the avant-garde music scene. Throughout the 1980s, the magazine produced themed issues and featured exclusive interviews with prominent composers like Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, and even hip-hop icon Queen Latifah. Despite its success, EAR published its final issue in 1991 due to financial challenges.
A New Chapter
In 2024, Accend Media, Inc. relaunched EAR Magazine as a digital-only platform. This new chapter revives the magazine’s legacy, continuing its commitment to showcasing the most exciting voices and trends in contemporary music while celebrating its storied past.
